Skunk Cabbage

Our very first blooming “wildflower” produces enough heat to melt snow and raise its internal temperature to anywhere from 59 degrees to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s warm and toasty inside the smelly skunk cabbage!

Mission

The mission of Preservation Parks of Delaware County is to protect and conserve Delaware County's natural scenic, historic and archaeological features for the benefit of present and future generations and provide for enjoyable, safe, easily accessible and aesthetically pleasing outdoor education and passive recreational experiences for the citizens of Delaware County.

Visiting Preservation Parks

Your Preservation Parks are for all to enjoy, so there are some guidelines to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone. Parks are open from 8:00 a.m. to dusk. Beer and alcohol are prohibited, as are hunting, horseback riding and motorized recreational vehicles. To help provide a safe and clean natural area to enjoy, we ask that all pets be on a leash, you clean up after your pet, and you stay on designated trails.

As our mission is to preserve natural areas for passive recreation, there are no facilities for organized sports.

All Preservation Parks are handicapped accessible as is feasible. Most parks have restroom facilities.

Rules and Regulations

Overview of Preservation Parks

Preservation Parks of Delaware County was created in response to a growing need to protect open space and unique natural habitats for the public good.

The Park District’s mission is to provide passive recreation activities, such as hiking and picnicking, while keeping development to a minimum. Walking paths and viewing areas allow people to get close to nature without disturbing it. Within the park system, visitors can see rolling meadows, virtually untouched wood lots, ravine systems, waterways, and the remains of glaciers.

Preservation Parks is funded primarily by property tax dollars approved by voters of Delaware County. The most recent 10-year tax levy was approved in 2008. Tax revenue is augmented by federal and state grants, along with generous contributions of land, materials, equipment and time from donors and volunteers.

Many donor and volunteer opportunities are available to help support your Park District. Our variety of programming, support and material needs may coincide with your varied interests and talents. Please contact any member of the Preservation Parks staff to offer your assistance.
