Spined Micrathena

Look for these oddly-shaped spiders with a large rear and spiny black projections as you walk through the woods this time of year. .

They build their large orb webs, with a tight spiral, "face high" across walking paths.

The spiders are harmless to humans and you could practice your limbo skills as you try to avoid destroying their webs.

Help improve Deer Haven Preserve with a donation to the:
Amy Clark/Bader Capital Campaign

Thanks to generous individual and corporate donations, Preservation Parks completed and opened The Lodge at Deer Haven Preserve in October, 2009. Since then, the 3,500-square-foot nature center, which includes a classroom and library, has been visited regularly by the public and has been the site of many of our nature programs.

The Lodge is an integral part of the Amy Clark/Bader Bird Sanctuary – a lasting tribute to Amy/Clark Bader, who died in January, 2005, after a lengthy battle with breast cancer and a neurological disorder. Despite her disabilities, she became a leading expert in the field of ornithology – teaching and writing children’s books about birds. Her husband, John Bader, made a generous donation to the park district in her memory, enabling Preservation Parks to develop the bird sanctuary and The Lodge.

The land for the 97-acre park itself was a gift from Phyllis A. Havener, donated in 2006. At the time, she said she wanted to provide others with the opportunity to enjoy the land as she and her family had been privileged to do for many years.

Today, those who wish to learn more about nature or just to retreat into a peaceful place where the only sounds are calling birds and the wind in the trees, are able to do so at Deer Haven Preserve.

Your tax-deductible gift will help Preservation Parks carry Phyllis Havener’s and Amy Clark/Bader’s legacies forward and continue to improve this natural and educational resource for county residents.
