Look for these oddly-shaped spiders with a large rear and spiny black
projections as you walk through the woods this time of year. .
They build their large orb webs, with a tight spiral, "face
high" across walking paths.
The spiders are harmless to humans and you could practice
your limbo skills as you try to avoid destroying their webs.
The crunch of leaves underfoot and the crisp,
cool air of fall make walking in the park especially wonderful. So join
Preservation Parks for the Fall 2008 Golden Marathon!
Walks take place nearly every Monday at 1:30 p.m. and are held in Preservation
Parks' preserves and other nature sites in central Ohio.
A project of Preservation Parks of Delaware County and Senior Citizens Inc., the
Golden Marathon is a series of hikes – each about two miles – that add up to at
least a 26.2-mile marathon at the end of three months.
Participants can join at any time; all hikes are free, except for day-long
trips.
The Fall Golden Marathon includes an all-day trip to Battelle Darby Creek and
Prairie Oaks Metro Parks on Oct. 20. A bus will leave the Senior Center, 800
Cheshire Road, at about 9 a.m. The cost for this hike is
$25, which covers transportation. Participants will pay for their own
lunches and incidentals.
Pre-registration is required; for information and reservations, call
