Letterbox Adventure in the Parks!

Ready for a Nap

Did you know that Ohio has only three "true" hibernating animals?

They are the bat (all species), the groundhog and the jumping mouse.

Others may go into periods of dormancy but don't have the significant metabolic decrease these animal have.

A groundhog's heart rate goes from 80 beats per minute to four, while its body temperature goes from 98 degrees Fahrenheit to 38 degrees. Even true hibernators do get up every few weeks to nibble on food and use the restroom.

Kids, are you ready for some summer fun? Let’s go on a letterbox adventure in the parks!

Preservation Parks of Delaware County, in partnership with the Delaware County District Library, will launch a letterbox project for children and families on June 8.

The project will have participants looking for hidden boxes in each of Preservation Parks’ six parks, by following nature clues developed by park naturalists. Library staff will help children to research terms used in the clues, which refer to geologic features, flora, fauna and natural processes such as decomposition.

Children will earn incentives for visiting the parks and finding the boxes
