Deer Haven Preserve Development Progress

Skunk Cabbage

Our very first blooming “wildflower” produces enough heat to melt snow and raise its internal temperature to anywhere from 59 degrees to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s warm and toasty inside the smelly skunk cabbage!

Note: If the temperature is lower than 35 degrees Fahrenheit, walkers will meet at the Food Court at Polaris Fashion Place, 1500 Polaris Parkway, Columbus
.

The development of Deer Haven Preserve began on November 8, 2007, and the park opened on August 24, 2008. Ground was broken the following month for the construction of a new 3,500-square-foot nature center.

The nature center will include a library with resource books, a classroom/meeting room for use by community groups, a wildlife viewing area and a display of bird and animal specimens. Binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to aid visitors in viewing wildlife

The building is under roof and the rough framing, and installation of windows and doors should be complete by the end of December.

The nature center is slated to open in summer, 2009.

During construction, the trail entrance near the kiosk will be closed. Access to all walking trails in the bird sanctuary is via the entrance near the boardwalk, just east of the parking lot. The trail loops around the meadow and into the woods, leading to the Bent Tree Ridge Trail.

The pet-friendly trail, which traverses the meadow between Liberty Road and the parking lot, is not affected by the construction.
