Our very first blooming “wildflower” produces enough heat to melt
snow and raise its internal temperature to anywhere from 59 degrees
to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s warm and toasty inside the smelly
skunk cabbage!

Golden Marathon

It may be cold
outside, but it’s still a great time for walking in the
parks!
A project of Preservation Parks of Delaware County and
Senior Citizens Inc.
the Golden Marathon is a series of hikes – each about two
miles – that add up to at least a 26.2-mile marathon at the
end of three months.
The winter walks take place every Monday at 1:30 p.m. and
are held in Preservation Parks' preserves and other area
locations. Participants can join at any time.
Note: If the temperature is lower than 35 degrees
Fahrenheit, walkers will meet at the Food Court at Polaris
Fashion Place, 1500 Polaris Parkway, Columbus

Char-Mar Ridge Preserve, located in Genoa Township, was purchased in 2000. By donating a significant portion of the purchase price, Joseph Pingue, Jr. enabled the park district to preserve a large area of open space in a rapidly developing area of Delaware County. The original purchase was 113 acres, with an adjoining 15 acres purchased a few years later.

Trails at Char-Mar Ridge Preserve
Glacier Ridge Trail – Beginning at the parking lot, this 1 2/3 mile unimproved surface trail winds through a mature woods and along ridges formed by the Wisconsinan Glacier thousands of years ago. The trail crosses forested ravines and passes by wooded wetlands as it traverses the park. The trees are mainly oak, beech, maple and hickory species. As you walk, you may see signs of deer, beavers, squirrels, coyotes, and raccoons. A variety of songbirds and woodpeckers can be observed, as well as several species of wildflowers during the appropriate season. Approximate walking time: 45 minutes. Moderate changes in elevation.
