FUN FACT!

They spin, they “think,” they look like leaves



Whirligig beetles are found on top of fresh, quiet water, spinning about like bumper cars. The have eyes split for double vision; the top of their eyes can see above the water and the bottom half can see below!

Ants have the largest brain of any insect. Combined, the number of brain cells in a colony of ants is about equal to the number of brain cells in a human.

A round-headed katydid usually resembles a green leaf, but be on the lookout for this rare pink form of the late-summer songster. Every year a few of these specimens turn up within their range, which covers a large part of the eastern U.S.

We have big plans for all of our parks. Besides the new Deer Haven Preserve, which we plan to open in summer, 2008, there are improvements planned for every park. In fact, there are nearly 60 improvements on the list – everything from restrooms to pedestrian bridges to new trails. These are just a few of the features you have been asking for, and their estimated price tags.
  • A catch-and-release fishing pond at Blues Creek Preserve. Cost: $20,000
  • A trail extension to the pond at Char-Mar Ridge Preserve, along with a wildlife blind. Cost: $55,000
  • Trail improvements – a wetland overlook, boardwalk and gravel surface – at Blues Creek Preserve. Cost: $125,000

  • More playground equipment at Blues Creek. Cost: $15,000

  • A large, reservable picnic shelter at Gallant Woods Preserve. Cost: $100,000

  • Additional playground equipment at Emily Traphagen Preserve. Cost: $25,000

  • A shelter at Emily Traphagen. Cost: $75,000

  • Additional playground equipment at Gallant Woods Preserve. Cost: $50,000

  • Extension of the trail at Hogback Ridge Preserve. Cost: $35,000

  • A wildlife blind at Hogback Ridge. Cost: $10,000
