*  = New Exciting Programs!

FUN FACT!

Of Birds...
The Blackpoll warbler (Dendroica striata) passes through Ohio in May on its trip northward after spending the winter in South America. Other wood warblers log long migrations as well, but the blackpoll is the endurance migratory champ among these tiny birds. Weighing in at ½ oz. and only 5 inches long from bill to tail, this bird clocks in a round trip of a little over 12,000 miles! Approximately 85 hours of that trip is non-stop over the Atlantic!.

...and Bunnies!
Eastern cottontail females (Sylvilagus) spend only about five minutes per day nursing young. Rabbit moms feed the babies very early in the morning and in the evening, and they will not approach the nest if a predator (you) is nearby. Please don’t move them. They are not orphaned!

Adult Nature Series * This program will focus on ‘Birding 101,’ giving adults an opportunity to learn how to identify and spot our feathered friends. At times, other topics will be explored.

Family Outings * These programs are designed with the whole family in mind. They are free and don’t require advance registration, unless otherwise noted.

Golden Marathon

Complete a marathon in easy stages by joining this walking group. Each week visit a different park in Delaware County and walk two to three miles. At the end of three months you will have walked at least 26.2 miles! Make new friends, improve your health, have fun, and get to know your local parks. Call Saundra Sklar at 740-595-2600 ext. 6 for more information. Senior Citizens, Inc., offers DATA bus transportation to the sites for $1.00. For information, call 740-369-5133.

Hound Hikes

New for 2008, Hound Hikes let nature lovers bring their dogs to our pet-friendly trails. The one- to two-mile hikes are for dogs and their owners, and are led by a naturalist. Each dog will get a bandana and receive a paw print for each hike completed. Hikes are once a month on Sundays at 3 p.m.; meet at the information board. Locations vary.

Habitat Hikes

Explore with a naturalist the diverse habitats found throughout Preservation Parks. Programs for 2008 focus on what can be seen during particular seasons and include a number of “owl prowls,” visiting a vernal pool in the spring, looking for woodcocks, and learning about animal tracks and scat. Dress for the weather and an outdoor experience. Meet at the information board. All hikes are for all ages and are free; locations and times vary.

Ohio Young Birders Club

We invite birders, ages 12-18, to join our new club for field trips and adventures in natural history. No prior birding experience necessary. Ohio Young Birders is a project of the Black Swamp Observatory; visit www.ohioyoungbirders.org to learn more.
