TRAIL INFORMATIONThe Sandel Legacy Trail, formerly the Big Walnut Community Trail, extends for 0.6-mile along a former railroad bed in the heart of the village of Sunbury. Open to the public for walking and bicycling, this multi-use trail is not yet connected on either end to other segments of the Ohio to Erie Trail. Parking is available, and a picnic area is located near the trail entrance. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail, and pet owners must clean up after them.
Watch for catbirds, groundhogs and other wildlife as you enjoy this quiet gravel trail. The Sandel Legacy Trail was donated to the Park District by Walter and Kathy Sandel in 1990. Funding for the trail conversion was provided by a Nature Works grant. The Trailhouse, which was a former depot, was purchased in 2002, and currently houses the Delaware County Model Railroaders group, which leases the building from Preservation Parks. Public open houses are held one weekend per month at the trailhouse, where visitors can see the model railroads, with multiple tracks, trains and buildings. Please click here for information about the Railroad Open Houses.
NOTICE: Preservation Parks is applying for a grant to pave the Sandel Legacy Trail, and is holding an information session on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 5:30-7 p.m., at the Sunbury Village Hall, 51 E. Cherry St. Please click here for information.
